Treasure Coast Legal's supermarket challenge results in 622 meals for the Treasure Coast Food Bank

STUART, Fla. – The team at Treasure Coast Legal took to the aisles of the supermarket for a race against the clock, facing off for the Treasure Coast Food Bank.

Each of the five attorneys at Treasure Coast Legal, armed only with a shopping cart and the food bank's list of its top ten most wanted items, competed against one another in a supermarket sweep on Tuesday, June 13 at Winn Dixie in Stuart. With fifteen minutes on the clock, the goal was to fill their carts with as many items on the most-wanted list, the winner getting as close to $200 at the checkout without going over.

"The items the team at Treasure Coast Legal is shopping for are the items we are most in need of, including canned beans, rice, laundry detergent, cereal, canned vegetables and more," said Wendie Berardi, Director of External Relations for the Treasure Coast Food Bank. "We're so excited to be a part of this fun-spirited competition, that in the end will do a lot of good for our community."

Daniel Haggerty, Esq. was the first to finish and the closest to $200, reaching a grand total of $200.01. Unfortunately, his penny overspend left him disqualified from the race.

Shaun Plymale, Esq. was the night's winner, spending a grand total of $198. Lou Larsen, Esq. placed second and Katherine Mish, Esq. placed third. Robert Rydzewski, Esq. also exceeded $200 and was disqualified.

"It was a fun competition and I'm thrilled to win, but of course the real winners are the residents of our community served by the Treasure Coast Food Bank," said Plymale. "No child should have to go to bed hungry, and food drives, large and small, conducted in businesses around Martin County can go a long way towards fulfilling that need."

In all, the firm purchased 746 pounds of food, which equals 622 meals.

The Treasure Coast Food Bank provides four-hundred very active pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior housing and low-income day-care centers with large quantities of food from name brand manufactures and USDA commodities on a daily basis. They also operate various mobile food pantries throughout their service area and assist pantries that provide backpacks to hundreds of children on the weekend. The backpacks are disbursed to qualifying children on Friday afternoon by various schools.
